definetely a different conception of "cynical" and "bitter" I'd say

A lot of the athiest posts I see are simply expressing alarm at the persecution that seemingly religious people feel that the should be subjected to.
(This weeks example: Alabama has a law that the governor must believe in god.)
I don't really think that's the same as bitter. Of course, the poster just might not like atheists.

Alarmed, aware, and open eyed is not the same as bitter or cynical. I think perhaps your study could use a larger sample.
I myself feel quite joyous quite often without resort to mythology.

That's easy to explain.
There's a war on. The people running the war are outspokenly Christian and many blogs by Christians express great joy over this war.
In general, Christians have every right to be happy. Your team is winning. You control all aspects of the American government. You are funnelling billions of taxpayer dollars to your causes through the Faith Based Community Initiatives. Non-Christians are increasingly excluded from public discourse. Your modern teachings, that sex is evil and war is noble, are increasingly becoming the law of the land.
So why shouldn't we be gloomy? For a compassionate person, this is a very dark time. America has slaughtered a hundred thousand innocents for nothing, under the banner of religion. What is there to be joyous about?

Yes, christians should be happy because they're murdering plenty of children right now.
Oh, and the rapture is coming.
